Help with Ritvast.

Trips not starting by themselves, one missing, or moving to a new phone? Here's how it works. The same help is in the app at Settings, Help.

Trips don't start by themselves

Some phones stop apps in the background to save battery. Then trips don't start. Turn off battery saving for Ritvast:

  • SamsungSettings > Apps > Ritvast > Battery > Unrestricted. And at Device care > Battery > Background usage limits: remove Ritvast from Sleeping apps.
  • Xiaomi, Redmi, POCOSettings > Apps > Ritvast > Battery saver > No restrictions. Also turn on Autostart.
  • Huawei, HonorSettings > Battery > App launch > Ritvast > Manage manually, all on.
  • OPPO, OnePlus, realmeSettings > Battery > Ritvast > Allow background activity.
  • Google Pixel and othersSettings > Apps > Ritvast > Battery > Unrestricted.
  • Every Android phoneAlso turn on Google Location Accuracy (Settings > Location > Location services). Without it your phone notices less quickly that you drive off.
  • iPhoneDon't swipe Ritvast away in the app switcher. Check at Settings > Ritvast > Location that Always is on, and that Background App Refresh is on.

The app has a button that opens your phone's battery settings right away: Settings, Help, My phone stops the app.

Questions

How does Ritvast know I'm about to drive?

While you're parked, Ritvast uses no GPS. Your phone notices by itself when you drive off: you leave the spot where your car was, or your phone sees you're in a car. Then Ritvast turns on GPS and logs the trip. When you stand still for 5 minutes, the trip is done and you get a notification: business or private?

The trip starts where your car was, at the moment you drove off. Trips shorter than 300 metres or 2 minutes don't count.

I chose 'While using the app'. What now?

Then Ritvast works half automatically: you tap Start trip when you set off, and the trip stops by itself. Want trips to start by themselves after all? Choose automatic in Settings. If your phone won't ask again, Ritvast opens your phone's settings, where you choose Always.

A trip was missed. How do I add it?

Tap the plus in your trip list. Choose from and to, or tap Same as if you drove that trip before. Add return trip makes the way back in one tap.

Enter your odometer reading now and then. Then Ritvast sees when kilometres are missing and you can explain them right away.

Why does the app ask for my odometer reading?

Your odometer makes your log add up: the end reading of one trip is the start reading of the next. GPS sometimes measures a few percent differently from your counter. If you enter your reading now and then, Ritvast adjusts the kilometres to it. If more kilometres are missing, Ritvast asks you to explain them.

A trip is wrong. Can I change it?

Yes. Open the trip and tap Edit. You can also split a trip, merge two trips, add a return trip or move a trip to another car. Ritvast keeps what it said first. In the PDF that trip gets an asterisk and the list of changes is at the back.

How do I send my trips to my accountant?

Go to Export, pick the period and the file: PDF, spreadsheet (CSV) or expense claim. Tap Export to share it, or Send to your accountant to email it right away.

I'm getting a new phone.

Your trips are in your phone's normal backup: iCloud on iPhone, Google on Android. When you set up a new phone from that backup, your trips are back.

You can also make your own backup file at Export. Keep that file or send it to your new phone and choose Restore a backup there. That also works from iPhone to Android and the other way round.

How do I erase everything?

In Settings, at the bottom: Erase all. That erases all trips, cars, readings and places on this phone and can't be undone. Save your yearly PDF first. Nothing is stored with us, so there's nothing to erase there.

Ritvast asks me to update.

Then this version is too old to work well. Update Ritvast in the App Store or Google Play. Until then, Ritvast keeps logging your trips, and you can still export them from that screen.
